Murder charge is filed in killing of Mission teen at KCK motel

A 29-year-old Kansas City man was charged Thursday with strangling an 18-year-old Mission woman found dead Tuesday night in a Kansas City, Kan., motel.

Wyandotte County prosecutors said Carlos A. Gallegos is charged with first-degree murder in the killing of Monica J. Chavira.

Gallegos was arrested earlier Thursday in Kansas City and is being held in Jackson County pending a hearing to determine if he will fight extradition to Kansas.

His bond in the Wyandotte County case has been set at $1 million.

Chavira was found dead Tuesday night in a motel room in the 500 block of Southwest Boulevard.
