Someone shot to death a mother of two preteen boys shortly after she pulled into her Kansas City driveway Wednesday night.

Nikita Boston, 36, had been with her sisters earlier in the evening, planning for Boston’s birthday in a few weeks.

After gunshots were reported about 11 p.m., police found Boston dead in her vehicle, its lights still on, in the 1100 block of East 66th Street.

Relatives say they have no idea who would have wanted to kill her.

“It’s still a mystery to us,” her sister Wanda Boston said Thursday afternoon. “That is what we are trying to piece together right now.”

Family members gathered Thursday outside Boston’s house just east of Troost Avenue. An older sister paced around the front yard, screaming and crying aloud, “My God, why?”

Boston was born and raised in Kansas City. She attended Southeast High School.

Last August, the single mother was hired as a client relations specialist for Validity Screening Solutions in Overland Park.

Workers there were shocked Thursday morning when they learned about her death.

“It just kind of let the air out of this place,” said Darren Dupriest, the company’s CEO. “Nobody really knows want to do right now.”

Boston had a lively, charming and outgoing personality, Dupriest said. She easily endeared herself to co-workers and clients.

“She was very quick to inject a little humor and a little bit of levity into things just everybody appreciated,” he said. “You can’t replace that.”

Wanda Boston said her sister was still grieving the death of her oldest son in November 2013.

Boston had attended various churches throughout the city. She was an excellent cook who specialized in baking.

“She would have 15 different sweets on the table,” her cousin, Delores McMurray, said with a laugh.

Boston was in a good mood when she left her sister’s house about 10:45 p.m. Wednesday. They spent the evening laughing and discussing what to do for her birthday.

“We really never made a decision,” said Wanda Boston.

Relatives were having a difficult time dealing with what happened.

“She had two small kids. It is really kind of hard to say who would be a beast to do something like that to her,” said Wanda Boston.

McMurray quickly added, “It was somebody who didn’t care about someone else’s life.”

Her death is the city’s 38th homicide in 2016.

Police ask anyone with information on the shooting to call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-8477.
