Police release name of Kansas City teen killed in accidental shooting

Police have identified a 17-year-old killed March 14 in an accidental shooting inside a Kansas City, North, residence as Garrett Turner.

The shooting occurred in a basement in the 8000 block of North Flora Avenue. Officers found the victim sitting on a sofa. A gray pistol and an ammunition magazine were nearby.

A witness told police that he heard a loud bang and screaming. He rushed downstairs and saw the victim with a gunshot wound to the head. The witness tried to call 911 but was unable to reach anyone quickly, so he sent a relative to a neighbor’s house for help.

Turner died at the scene. Details of what led to the shooting were not released.

His death was the city’s 19th homicide of the year.
