A man on a motorized wheelchair was struck by a vehicle and left in critical condition in a hit-and-run wreck Monday in Kansas City, according to police.

Police were investigating the incident about 10 a.m. near 11th and Charlotte streets. The wreck left the wheelchair in pieces in the street.

The initial investigation showed that the man had been using the crosswalk to cross 11th Street when he was hit by a vehicle that left the scene without stopping, said Sgt. Bill Mahoney, an accident investigation supervisor at the Kansas City Police Department.

The man was hospitalized in critical condition, Mahoney said.
