Man allegedly shot and killed his girlfriend's father in Overland Park
A man shot and killed his girlfriend's father at a home near the 8300 block of Switzer Road in Overland Park, police said.
The shooter was cooperating with police and taken into custody without incident, police said.
Police arrived at the home in the 8300 block of Switzer Street around 10:20 a.m. and found 52-year-old David Slater fatally shot and a child shot.
The 6-year-old girl was taken to a hospital and was expected to be OK.
Slater's 85-year-old father said the family is searching for answers about what led to the shooting.
"We are still trying to figure out what happened and why it happened," Thomas Slater said. "We don't have any of the details. It's still early and we have to talk to somebody who was actually there when it happened.
"We're all in shock," he said.
A man was in the home of his girlfriend's father. There was a disturbance between the boyfriend and father, said Officer John Lacy, Overland Park police spokesman.
The older man was shot and killed.
A woman called police.
Police do not have any indication that the gunman intentionally targeted the child, Lacy said.
The child was reportedly the shooter's daughter.
Investigators are trying to determine if the child was injured by a ricocheting bullet. The child was struck in the thigh or lower leg, Lacy said.
Police do not know what prompted the shooting.
“This is a pretty quiet neighborhood so this is pretty shocking,” he said.
Neighbors agreed. It's an area with lots of kids and families, they said.
Children freely play outside, they said.
