Man fleeing KC police in truck surrenders after speeding through rush-hour traffic
The driver of a white pickup truck on Monday fled Kansas City police, crossing into Kansas and speeding through rush-hour traffic for nearly 40 minutes before surrendering in Kansas City.
The chase began shortly after 4 p.m. when a white pickup truck fled after hitting an occupied police car at Lawndale Avenue and East 34th Street in Kansas City. The police car was heavily damaged, but the officer inside was not injured, according to KC police.
The car fled into Kansas City, Kan., then Roeland Park in Johnson County, where police stopped their pursuit by car and followed the suspect via department helicopter.
The driver ventured south on Interstate 35 and eventually east on I-435 in heavy traffic before surrendering in Kansas City.
The driver struck a minivan on I-35.
During the chase, the pickup truck weaved between cars and oncoming traffic at high speeds in heavy traffic on Roe Boulevard, Shawnee Mission Parkway, southbound I-35, southbound Quivira Road and I-435.
At one point the truck slowed and allowed a woman passenger riding in the vehicle to get out before continuing on. The woman was later taken into custody, police say.
At approximately 4:45 p.m. the car got off I-435 onto Wornall Road and stopped. A man wearing blue jeans and what appeared to be a yellow construction vest exited the truck, lay on the ground and placed his arms behind his back to await Kansas City police. They took him in custody shortly after.
The incident is being investigated as an assault on an officer, a police spokesman said.
