Belton police fatally shot man reportedly wielding knife during disturbance at home
Belton police officers fatally shot a man Sunday while responding to a reported armed disturbance at a home, according to the Belton Police Department.
The shooting occurred about 11:30 p.m. at a home in the 200 block of Spring Street, the Police Department said in a written statement.
Police said officers were called to the home for a reported armed disturbance. Police on Tuesday declined to discuss the specifics of that incident, citing an ongoing investigation of the shooting.
Neighbors told the local television station Fox 4 that the the man who was shot had been threatening people with a knife, yelling racial slurs, and smelled of alcohol.
"He threatened to kill me and my family," neighbor Alanna Sapenaro told the station.
According to the Police Department, arriving officers encountered a 38-year-old man and shot him.
The man was taken to a hospital, where he died.
The shooting is being investigated by the Belton Police Department and the Cass County Sheriff's Office.
