Man shoots his father and store clerk in double homicide, charges say

A man arguing with his father gunned him down outside a Kansas City convenience store then killed a store clerk standing beside him, according to murder charges filed Wednesday.

Reginald E. Jones Jr., 18, of Kansas City, is charged with two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of armed criminal action in the deaths of Reginald E. Jones Sr., 36, and Daryl A. Singleton, 57.

A witness overheard the elder Jones arguing with his son on his cell phone soon before the killing around 7:30 p.m. Dec. 7 at LP’s Grocery and Liquor at 4502 E. 24th St.

The younger Jones then arrived at the store and his father went outside to talk with him, the witness said.

Surveillance camera footage shows that the elder Jones was standing outside the store alongside Singleton who was leaning against an ice cooler smoking a cigarette.

Three other men who did not appear to be part of the confrontation were standing to the side on the sidewalk.

The younger Jones pulled a gun and shot his father, court records show. He then pointed the gun at Singleton and shot him. The other three men fled on foot and Jones went back to an orange Mitsubishi Eclipse and sped away.

The witness in the store said he heard several gun shots.

The younger Jones voluntarily turned himself in to police Monday.

The elder Jones and Singleton were the 136th and 137th homicide victims in Kansas City in 2017.
