Man facing $14,000 court debt allegedly robbed Overland Park bank. The haul? $615

A man charged with robbing an Overland Park bank Tuesday had recently been released from jail in another case where he owes more than $14,000, according to court records.

Ryan Michael Cothern, 41, was charged Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Kansas City, Kan., with holding up the U.S. Bank at 9900 West 87th Street shortly before 1 p.m. Tuesday.

A few minutes after the robbery, Cothern was spotted by an Overland Park police sergeant. Cothern ran, but was taken into custody after a foot chase.

According to court documents filed Wednesday with the charges, the robber placed a plastic bag on a counter and showed a bank teller a message on his cell phone that read, “put 100s, 50s and 20s in the bag.”

When the teller hesitated, he told her, “Don’t do anything you shouldn’t do,” according to the allegations.

The teller complied, and the robber fled with $615.

After his arrest, Cothern admitted to investigators that he had robbed the bank, the documents state.

According to Johnson County court and jail records, Cothern was released from jail on Friday where he had been held for a probation violation in a DUI case.

During a court hearing that day, a judge ordered him to make monthly payments of $100 to pay off the more than $14,000 he still owed in restitution and court costs, according to the records.
