Independence police shoot, kill man who stole patrol car

An Independence police officer fatally shot a suspect who stole a police car and crashed it into a mobile home Monday in Blue Summit.

Police said the man, who was not immediately identified, was driving an F-150 pickup truck that was reported stolen out of Cass County. Police attempted to pull him over at East 23rd Street and Westport Road, but the man sped away. The man then crashed into a cemetery fence in the 1900 block of Blue Ridge Boulevard. The suspect then fled on foot. Police found him lying in a wooded area but he stood up and ran off again.

Police said the man then got into one of the police cars. During a struggle, an officer shot the man once. The suspect drove off in the police vehicle and crashed into a mobile home in the 1800 block of Blue Ridge Boulevard. The location is in Blue Summit, an unincorporated area between Kansas City and Independence.

The man was pronounced dead at a hospital. No police officers were injured. The Jackson County Sheriff’s Department assisted in the chase.
