Man shot by police after reportedly pointing gun was 21-year-old father of two
Kansas City police have identified a 21-year-old man whom officers fatally shot Friday morning as Rodney E. Jacobs.
The shooting happened in the 4300 block of Chestnut Avenue after officers responded to a domestic violence disturbance involving a man armed with a gun. While officers were on their way there, the call was updated to report that shots were fired.
ShotSpotter confirmed the shooting, police said.
Arriving officers saw a gunman who matched the suspect description. Police said that officers spent 20 minutes attempting to persuade Jacobs to drop his weapon. Jacobs allegedly refused and pointed his gun at officers, and officers shot him.
A man who lives close to the home of Jacobs’ girlfriend said Jacobs held the gun to his own head in a threatening manner before he turned the weapon on police.
“He yelled, ‘Shoot me, shoot me,’ ” the neighbor said. “And then they shot him.”
The initial call to police reportedly involved the man and a woman with whom he had a relationship. The neighbor said the man and woman had two young sons.
