Double homicide puts the 2017 toll in Kansas City over 70

The victims of a double homicide at 28th Terrace and Myrtle Avenue were the second and third men killed Saturday in Kansas City.

Kansas City police officers were sent to the scene shortly after 10 p.m. to assist paramedics after a caller requested an ambulance. Two men were found shot in the street.

Paramedics were unable to save the victims. Further identifying information was unavailable early Sunday morning.

Kansas City Police Sgt. Kari Thompson was joined by Rosilyn Temple of KC Mothers in Charge and Pat Clarke, a community activist, at a media event near the scene of the slaying.

The three called for an end to the increased violence in the city.

Clarke began his remarks: “I’m trying to say it without cussin’.”

When Thompson said at least 70 people had been killed in Kansas City this year, Clarke cussed anyway.

There were roughly 50 homicides in the city by this point last year, Thompson said.
