8-year-old girl reportedly shot in head at playground

An eight-year-old girl reportedly was shot in the head while at a playground on Kansas City’s East Side on Sunday evening.

Relatives and neighbors said they think the girl was passing out pieces of gum when the shooting occurred at 20th Street and Park Tower Road.

Police said they received a call at 7 p.m. After arriving on the scene, officers located a juvenile victim on the playground with an apparent gunshot wound. The victim was transported to a local hospital, and remains in life-threatening condition.

The person of interest in the shooting, also a juvenile, has been detained.
