Police used a controlled explosion to detonate a suspicious package found near the Richard Bolling Federal Building in downtown Kansas City during Monday morning’s rush hour.

Police responded about 6:10 a.m. to a report of a suspicious package in the 600 block of East 12th Street. Officers located a backpack and closed off the area.

As a precaution, police closed several surrounding streets in the area to both vehicle and pedestrian traffic.

By using the controlled explosion, police determined the backpack did not contain any explosives. Police reopened the streets about 9:15 a.m. and have cleared the area.
