Inmate escapes from minimum security prison in Leavenworth

U.S. marshals are hunting for an inmate who escaped Friday from the minimum security Federal Prison Camp in Leavenworth, Kan.

Prison officials discovered Timothy Taylor, 41, missing about 10:10 p.m. and notified the U.S. Marshals Service and other law enforcement agencies, according to a press release from the Federal Bureau of Prisons.

An internal investigation has begun into how Taylor escaped. He was serving a 10-year sentence for possession of cocaine base with the intent to distribute it in Boone County, Mo. During Taylor’s sentencing hearing in November 2009, the judge recommended that Taylor be provided a 500-hour drug treatment program while in prison. Taylor had been scheduled for release in July 2018 and was to serve five years of supervised release after that, according to online records.

The minimum security Federal Prison Camp houses about 400 male offenders, federal officials said.
