Two people are in custody after a man was shot in Independence around midnight Thursday night and later died, which led to an hourslong standoff.

Independence police were called just before midnight to the Walgreens at 23rd Street and Sterling Avenue. They found a man who had been shot, and he was taken to the hospital, according to police.

Officers tracked two suspects to an apartment building at 1719 S. Sterling Ave. One person surrendered to police but another person refused to surrender, which led to the standoff, police say.

Police called in tactical units and the second person was taken into custody about 3:25 a.m. Friday without incident.
