Kidnapping charge filed in case of man found dead on south KC street
Federal prosecutors have charged a 25-year-old man with kidnapping another man whose body was found on a south Kansas City street on Tuesday.
Raynal King was charged in U.S. District Court in Kansas City with kidnapping resulting in death, which carries a possible death sentence.
The victim, Jaime Patton, 28, had been shot and was found dead about 6:30 a.m. Tuesday in the 13700 block of Holmes Road.
According to court documents filed in the case, Patton was driving a Jeep Patriot on Tuesday morning when he left a hospital where he was caring for a family member.
Shortly after he left, Patton called his wife and asked her for the PIN to their debit card.
The documents allege that there were several failed attempts to use Patton’s debit card that morning.
Investigators later obtained surveillance video from several ATM locations where those attempts were made. The videos showed someone driving Patton’s Jeep with Patton in the passenger seat, according to the documents.
Video at one of those locations also showed the same suspect later driving a silver Pontiac.
The Jeep was found abandoned on Tuesday night near 83rd Street and Brooklyn Avenue.
On Thursday, photos of the suspect from those transactions and the silver Pontiac were provided to Kansas City police officers.
Officers on patrol that afternoon spotted and stopped King driving the Pontiac.
When questioned, King initially gave police several versions of what he had done on Tuesday. But when he was shown one of the surveillance photos, he admitted that he was the driver of the Jeep, according to the documents.
King then said that he had been sitting on his front porch Tuesday morning when a man identified in court documents as “Suspect 2” showed up at King’s house driving the Jeep.
King said he saw Patton sitting in the passenger seat and Suspect 2 was holding a gun.
Suspect 2 told King he needed help, and King said he got in the driver’s seat while Suspect 2 got in the back seat of the Jeep, according to the court documents.
King said they drove to several ATM locations and tried to use Patton’s debit card.
At some point, King told detectives that Suspect 2 shot Patton.
According to the documents, King said that Patton tried to jump out of the vehicle, and Suspect 2 fired at him.
King said he slowed down and Patton jumped out. Patton was lying in the street as they drove away, King said, according to the court documents.
During a subsequent search of King’s apartment, officers found the keys to the Jeep and a debit card belonging to Patton.
Patton, 28, lived in Kansas City and worked as a technology department technician for Belton public schools, fixing and repairing computers.
“He was seen by everyone in the district because of what he did,” district spokeswoman Melissa McConnell said. “It is still so raw for everybody.”
In a statement released by the district, Patton was called a “well-loved colleague in the Belton School District family.” He was also awarded Technology Support Staff Member of the Year in 2016.
“Jaime started with the district in the fall of 2012 school year, was known for having a calm and reassuring demeanor, instilling trust in all of his work relationships,” the statement read. “Our thoughts are with his family at this time.”
King has a previous robbery conviction, according to court records, and was on parole. Prison records show he was released from prison in March.
