The Belton City Council recently approved plans for a new four-story hotel.

Fairfield Inn and Suites by Marriott — a project by the Overland Park, Kan.-based Salina Hotel Corp. — is set to be built north of Missouri 58 between Mullen Road and Interstate 49. The 48,000 square-foot hotel will have 83 rooms, according to design plans.

The city said in a news release that Salina Hotel is expected begin construction by the end of this year and the company hopes to open the hotel by the end of 2018. The project also includes construction of a new east-west access road adjacent to existing retail development to the south.

The new road will be constructed with funds from a newly established Fairfield Inn Community Improvement District, the news release said.

The city council approved ordinances establishing the Fairfield Inn Community Improvement District on Sept. 26 — signing off on a cooperative agreement between the newly created district, the city, and Salina Hotel, while also approving the development plan and authorizing the issuance of taxable industrial revenue bonds for $7,746,700 to finance the new hotel’s cost.

“Belton is fast becoming the business epicenter of Cass County, which is experiencing a surge in both residential and commercial development,” Belton City Manager Alexa Barton said in a statement. “Located just west of Interstate 49 and south of the CenterPoint Intermodal Center, this hotel project will serve an unmet need for quality hotel space in Belton and the surrounding region.”

Salina Hotel Regional Manager Shamir Bhakta called the project “a great fit” for Belton as well as Cass County.

“We look forward to developing the Fairfield Inn & Suites Belton and building a great asset to the community,” Bhakta said in a statement. “Salina Hotel Corp. is excited to do business in Belton due to the recent and expected growth in the area.”

Project partners include the city of Belton, Belton Economic Development, and Salina Hotel Corp. Additional retail pad sites are available just west of the hotel project.

In addition to the new hotel project, the city’s economic development organization also recently announced that the city is reviewing plans for a Cracker Barrel Old Country Store in Belton.

The planning commission was expected to consider a final plat and final development plan during its meeting Oct. 2 for the potential new restaurant.

If approved by the city, Cracker Barrel is expected to be built at the southeast corner of 163rd Street and I-49 in the Cornerstone Pointe development.

An application for the final development plan was submitted Aug. 17 by Adams Hill, LLC, according to the Oct. 2 agenda packet provided by the city. The company hopes to begin construction by mid-November.
