A 76-year-old man died in a wreck Friday after his pickup truck hit a bridge support on 23rd Street at Blue Ridge Boulevard, according to Kansas City police.

The crash was reported about 1:30 p.m. when a Ford F-150 pickup truck traveling east on 23rd Street left the road, entered the median and hit the bridge support.

Police identified the man as Bernard I. Sweeney, of Dearborn.

Police said it was unclear why the truck left the road.

Sweeney died at the scene. He was the only occupant of the truck.

The Missouri Department of Transportation said it would have inspectors examine the bridge support.
