An elderly woman died Tuesday after going back into a burning home in Kansas City to try to save her dog, according to fire officials.

Kansas City firefighters responded around 3:04 p.m. to the home in the 5500 block of Hardesty Avenue, where they met the woman’s grandson outside, said Michael Hopkins, a spokesman for the fire department.

Crews entered the building and removed the woman through a bedroom window, Hopkins said. She was overcome by smoke and couldn’t be resuscitated. Her dog also died.

Firefighters quickly exstinguished the blaze and later determined the fire was caused by an overloaded breaker.

The fire department also stressed that, once someone is able to escape a burning structure, they should stay outside and alert arriving fire crews to other people or pets inside.
