Wrong-way driver killed in head-on crash on I-29 in Kansas City's Northland
A driver headed the wrong way on northbound Interstate 29 in Kansas City's Northland died Sunday when he crashed head-on into a pickup truck near Barry Road.
The crash occurred about 6:15 a.m. Sunday, closing the northbound lanes of I-29 for more than two hours. The driver of the pickup was injured and taken to a hospital. He was in stable condition, according to Capt. Lionel Colón, a spokesman for the Kansas City Police Department.
At the time of the crash, the wrong-way driver was in a white Chevrolet Suburban headed south in the northbound lanes. The SUV collided head-on with a black Dodge pickup.
Both drivers, who were alone in their vehicles, were taken to a hospital. The SUV driver died of his injuries later. The name of the driver has not been released pending positive identification and notification of his family.
The northbound lanes of the highway were closed while police investigated the crash and crews cleared the debris. The highway reopened about 8:30 a.m.
