Barbershoppers, Sweet Adelines celebrate anniversary of The Barbershop Harmony Society

The voices of Barbershoppers and Sweet Adelines singing harmony filled Barney Allis Plaza during a mass sing as National Barbershop Quartet Day was celebrated Wednesday in Kansas City.

Members of the Heart of America Chorus, the local chapter of The Barbershop Harmony Society, gathered with fellow choruses, Sweet Adelines and high school quartets to celebrate the 80th birthday of the founding of the Barbershop Harmony Society.

"It's a celebration of singing and the joy of singing, creating a harmony that our world, quite frankly, needs a little more of," said Marty Monson, CEO of The Barbershop Harmony Society.

A chance meeting between Tulsa businessmen O.C. Cash and Ruperty Hall in 1938 at Kansas City’s historic Muehlebach Hotel planted the seed for a worldwide harmony movement.
