Female inmate held in Johnson County Jail for misdemeanor theft, obstruction has died

An inmate died at a hospital on Friday after she was found unresponsive inside her cell at the Johnson County Jail.

It remains unclear how the 59-year-old Wanda Denise Kendrick died, according to Lt. Paul Nonnast with the Johnson County Sheriff's Office.

The Sheriff's Office and Kansas Bureau of Investigation are investigating Kendrick's death, according to a press release sent by Nonnast.

Kendrick was housed in a cell alone.

She had been in the jail since Feb. 23 on two counts of misdemeanor theft and one count of obstructing legal process, according to the Sheriff's Office website.

Kendrick was found at about 9 a.m. In-house medical staff attempted life-saving measures, according to the release.

She was transported to a local hospital and died at about 1:45 p.m.
