A suspicious object removed from an Independence apartment by a bomb squad Monday night turned out to be an improvised explosive made with fireworks and shrapnel, according to police.

Independence police had been called about 5 p.m. Monday to the Independence Ridge Apartments at 19012 E. 37th Terrace South on a report of a suspicious device. Arriving officers were told the device had been found in an unoccupied apartment that was undergoing repairs.

The police department's Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit was called to the scene and one apartment building in the complex was evacuated.

About 11 p.m. police removed the device from the apartment and destroyed it at another location.

Police said the device was an improvised explosive made with consumer-grade fireworks with shrapnel added.

An investigation into the incident continues.
