Getting down for the holidays at ‘We Wish You a Merry Bassmas’

Nothing fills a holiday concert stage more thoroughly than a convergence of bass violins.

Musicians toting the 20- to 30-pound instruments led a uniquely resonant holiday concert Sunday with the “We Wish You a Merry Bassmas” gathering at the Black Dolphin in Kansas City.

The concert invited bass instruments of all kinds, not just the giant bass violins, but electric bass and acoustical bass guitars as well — anyone who can go low.

“All styles,” the Kansas City Bass Workshop said in its invitation, “Classical, Jazz, Rock, Funk, Folk…”

Musicians of varying experience and age joined in with the promise that professionals including Johnny Hamil, Gerald Spaits, James Ward, Rich Burgess, and Bryan Hicks would be helping lead performances of holiday classics — “Frosty the Snowman,” “Funky Rudolph,” “Greensleeves,” among others, and, of course, “We Wish You a Merry Bassmas.”
