Fiery crash kills FedEx driver, closes southbound I-435 near 23rd Street
A fatal fiery crash involving a FedEx truck and other vehicles has closed southbound Interstate 435 in Kansas City near 23rd Street.
The driver of the FedEx truck was killed when he rear-ended a pickup truck and crashed into the guardrail, said Capt. Joe Crayon with the Kansas City police traffic unit.
The truck burst into flames.
Traffic had been stopped but the FedEx truck did not, hitting the pickup truck, which then hit another car and caused another car to veer into the guardrail. The crash occurred about 8:30 a.m.
The driver’s name has not been released, pending notification of relatives.
Several people tried to help the driver but were unable to reach him. Four vehicles were involved. There were no other serious injuries.
Reached for comment on the wreck, FedEx spokesman David Westrick provided a written statement.
“First and foremost, we extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of those involved in this accident,” the statement read. “Safety is our highest priority and we are cooperating fully with investigating authorities at this time.”
Traffic along the southbound highway was closed at Truman Road for several hours while police gathered evidence.
