Two people were killed in a small plane crash Monday evening at an airport near Topeka, the Kansas Highway Patrol said.

The Topeka Capital-Journal reported online Monday night the plane is a 1965 Piper PA-30 Twin Comanche registered to an owner in Mission.

Kansas Highway Patrol spokesman Trooper Don Hughes said the crash was north of Billard Municipal Airport. According to the Metropolitan Topeka Airport Authority, that is 3 miles east of downtown Topeka.

The crash reportedly occurred after the airport had closed for the day. The phone recording at the airport said it closes at 4:30 p.m.

The Kansas Highway Patrol is handing the initial investigation. Hughes said the scene would be protected until morning. The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board also are expected to investigate.
