I-35 back open after fatal traffic crash near downtown Kansas City
One man was killed Thursday morning in a wreck involving three vehicles on southbound Interstate 35 just south of downtown Kansas City.
The wreck was reported about 7:15 a.m. Thursday on the interstate just west of where it splits from Southwest Trafficway.
Witnesses told police that a driver of a black BMW was on southbound I-35 when he lost control and struck the crash cushion where Southwest Trafficway splits from I-35.
The crash turned the car sideways into the southbound lanes of I-35 and into the path of a pickup truck that was hauling a trailer. The pickup struck the BMW and then collided with a third car, police on the scene said.
The driver of the BMW, who is believed to be in his 20s, died at the scene. No one was injured in the two other vehicles, police said.
The highway was shut down for about three hours while police investigated the wreck, which caused major traffic delays around the downtown loop.
