Woman dies in Independence house fire Wednesday morning

An elderly woman was killed early Wednesday in a house fire near 34th Street and East Erickson Road in Independence, according to authorities.

Crews were summoned to the fire just after 6:30 a.m. Firefighters arrived and found flames and smoke pouring out of the front window and doors. It took crews about 10 minutes to bring the blaze under control.

The name of the victim has not been released. Details of how the fire started remains under investigation. Fire officials said there was only one person inside the house at the time of the fire. Neighbors said they believe that two women lived in the residence.

The blaze caused about $30,000 in damage to the one-story, wood-frame ranch.

A fire marshal was summoned to the residence to gather evidence, officials said.
