KU Hospital is adding a sports medicine clinic in Lawrence

The University of Kansas Health System is entering the Lawrence market with a new orthopedic and sports medicine clinic.

The new clinic stems from the hiring of Jeffrey C. Randall, an orthopedic surgeon, who has been affiliated with Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

Randall, a 1990 graduate of the University of Kansas School of Medicine, this month joins the KU health system staff and also will teach at the medical center, according to KU Hospital spokesman Dennis McCulloch.

Randall has been with OrthoKansas LLC, a multi-physician practice in Lawrence.

A spokeswoman for Lawrence Memorial Hospital said the hospital “had no reason to be concerned” about competition from the KU-tied orthopedic clinic, which is going into a 6,000-square-foot space at Wakarusa Drive and 18th Street in west Lawrence.

KU Hospital in September announced a joint operating agreement with Hays Medical Center in western Kansas, and in November it announced a radiation oncology partnership with Stormont-Vail Health in Topeka.

McCulloch said KU was “working with other health care organizations in Lawrence to identify collaborative practice opportunities” but “there is nothing else on the table” regarding possible expansion in Lawrence at this time.
