The rapidly expanding Pet Supplies Plus plans 10 locations for Kansas City in the next four years.

The Livonia, Mich.-based company has signed a deal with B&B Pet Products LLC of Hurst, Texas. B&B plans to have the first area location open in December and is in final negotiations for a space in Lenexa. The second location is scheduled to open in the second quarter of 2017.

Greg McMillan is the owner. His nephew Todd Shea, along with Greg’s son, Clay McMillan, 25, and daughter, Perry McMillan, 22, will have equity in B&B and will relocate to Kansas City to oversee the operations.

The American Pet Products Association said pet industry spending was $60.28 billion in 2015, up from $36.3 billion in 2005. It estimates sales to be $62.75 billion this year.

“But we haven’t seen competition keep up with the growth and demand in many pockets, and Kansas City is one of those pockets,” said Greg McMillan.

The stores, which are typically 8,000-10,000 square feet, offer a wide selection of pet food, pet products and grooming services. They also sell birds and fish.

Pet Supplies Plus also signed new franchisee agreements for California, Colorado and Oklahoma. It plans to open 60 new stores this year. It currently has more than 360 locations in 27 states.
