Merriam IHOP shutting down Sunday after five decades

Merriam mainstay IHOP is shutting down Sunday after more than five decades of operations.

IHOP officials said it was a franchise-owned location and confirmed the Sunday closing but declined to comment further. The restaurant has operated at 8701 Shawnee Mission Parkway since the early 1960s, according to The Kansas City Star archives.

IHOP is on the corner of the former Kmart center. Kmart closed in late January 2013 and the R.H. Johnson Co. said it continues to “market that property and have good interest.” It said the IHOP building is under different owners.

Maggiano’s confirms Corbin Park location

Maggiano’s Little Italy has confirmed a new location in Corbin Park for a mid-2017 opening. According to plans submitted to the city, it will be an 8,497-square-foot restaurant at the corner of 135th Street and Metcalf Avenue, in Overland Park, on the east side of the Corbin Park fountain.

Red Rock Canyon Grill, on the west side of the fountain at 13505 Metcalf Ave., plans an Oct. 11 opening.

Pei Wei Asian Diner shuts down

Pei Wei Asian Diner, the sister company of P.F. Chang’s China Bistro, has closed its Overland Park location, at 9222 Metcalf Ave., after 10 years of operation. A company spokeswoman said the lease ended and would not be renewed.

Ulta Beauty’s Olathe expansion

A decade ago, Ulta Beauty opened in Olathe Pointe.

Now it has relocated and expanded in the center. The new store, at 14621 W. 119th St. in Olathe, features more than 20,000 beauty products under 500 brands. It also has a full-service salon.

It will have its grand opening Friday through Sunday with giveaways to the first 100 customers in line, as well as free makeover and consultations throughout the weekend. Ulta has 907 stores in 48 states

Coming soon: Main Event, McLain’s Market

▪ Dallas-based Main Event Entertaiment plans an Oct. 11 opening for its new location at 11950 S. Kansas City Road in Olathe. The centers feature bowling, interactive games, a gravity ropes obstacle course, a multi-level laser tag arena, and a full-service restaurant and bar.

▪ McLain’s Bakery in Waldo is planning a soft opening for its new McLain’s Market, 10695 Roe Ave. in Overland Park, on Sept. 27.
