In its first acquisition since returning the Hostess brand to the market, Kansas City-based Hostess Brands on Monday announced the purchase of Superior Cake Products, maker of eclairs, madeleines, brownie bites and other products.

Hostess Brands, bought in bankruptcy proceedings by investors Metropoulos & Co. and Apollo Global Management in 2013, said the acquisition was influenced by rapidly expanding in-store bakery sales.

The purchase price wasn’t revealed.

Superior Cake Products, which has a bakery in Southbridge, Mass., uses the brand name Superior on Main. The more than century-old company makes a range of bakery goods sold by retail bakeries.

Hostess Brands has been working to expand its product line beyond the company’s well-known Twinkies, CupCakes, Zingers, Ho Hos and Donettes brands. It has added new Twinkies and Ho Hos flavors and created partnerships with Mars to use M&M and Milky Way toppings on its brownies.

Hostess Brands operates bakeries in Emporia, Kan.; Columbus, Ga., and Indianapolis.
