The driver of the second car told police that the vehicle in front of him made a sudden lane change. He then realized the victim’s vehicle was stopped on the highway in front of him.
The driver attempted to stop but could not, striking the victim’s vehicle. The driver got out of his vehicle, police said, and ran over to the second car, where he observed the victim in the driver’s seat.
The driver and other motorists who stopped to help tried unsuccessfully to get the victim out of the vehicle, which was engulfed in flames, police said.
The victim died at the scene. He was alone in the car.
Three northbound lanes on I-435 from Grandview were closed for a while while police gathered evidence.
