Hoping for snow? Wish again. Kansas City may break record for warmest Christmas Eve ever

Update: Kansas City broke the record for warmest Christmas Eve. Here’s the story.

Tuesday marks the winter solstice, and though Kansas Citians woke up to temperatures in the 20s, the crisp winter weather won’t last long.

The region could set record for its warmest ever Christmas Eve this year, according to the National Weather Service.

The record currently sits at 66 degrees, recorded in 1893 and 1955. As of now, forecasters say Friday could get as toasty as 68 degrees.

So far, Kansas City has seen temperatures about 15 to 20 degrees warmer than is average for this time of year. This trend is expected to continue through the week, with highs expected in the 50s most days.

The weather on Christmas will be unseasonably warm in Kansas City, and may even break the record for warmest Christmas Eve yet, according to the National Weather Service.

On Sunday, when the low temperature reached the teens for the first time all month, the weather service noted that this was one of the latest calendar dates that such a low temperature was finally reached.

When it comes to Christmas Day, historically, there’s about a 20% chance that snow will fall in Kansas City. This year, the odds of seeing white flakes pretty much look impossible.

“Dreaming of white Christmas? Might want to keep dreaming this year with temperatures in the 50s expected,” the National Weather Service tweeted.

While the weather should be great for flying — and maybe even for opening the windows and uncovering the grill — it won’t be great for sledding or snowmen. Luckily, hot cocoa tastes good any time of year.
