Taylor Swift-Travis Kelce wedding plans appear to be coming into focus
This is shaping up to be the cultural event of the year.
No one knows for certain when Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce and global singing star Taylor Swift will be married, but the scuttle about the ceremony taking place next week seems to be true.
You know this is a big deal when the New York Times has a story about the pending nuptials written and researched by five reporters. They looked into the permits filed in New York City, including around Madison Square Garden where a reception is expected to be held.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani earlier this month seemingly confirmed what had been rumored: that Kelce and Swift would tie the knot in his city during the extended Fourth of July weekend.
The New York Times story said a “multi-day event at Madison Square Garden” is planned and that Swift had rented the home of the Rangers and NBA champion Knicks.
This is from the story: “On July 2, the plans call for an intimate gathering of about 100 people at the Garden. The next day on July 3, about 1,000 guests would gather there for a splashier celebration, with possible stage appearances.
“The preparations extend beyond the arena: A permit was filed with New York City to close the streets around Madison Square Garden from July 2 to midday July 4 for the events, according to three people who have knowledge of the matter. Several members of the Kansas City Chiefs have booked hotel rooms for dates around July 3 at the Marriott Marquis in Times Square.”
That hotel is a little more than a mile from Madison Square Garden. We know Chiefs coach Andy Reid will be at the wedding, because he’s already got his tuxedo.
Swift has a love of Fourth of July parties, and perhaps she knows her history, too. If the intimate gathering is when the couple says their “I dos,” it will be on another significant 250th anniversary for the United States.
The Continental Congress declared freedom from Great Britain on July 2, 1776, when it voted to approve a resolution, as the Constitution Center website noted.
New York will be bustling around July 3 in the midst of the city’s 250th anniversary celebration. Historic tall ships will sail past the Statue of Liberty. Parades are planned. Fireworks will explode over rivers.
Thomas Jefferson’s handwritten Declaration of Independence will be on rare, public display at the New York Public Library.
And, in a historic first, the Times Square ball will drop on a day other than New Year’s Eve. The ball will drop eight times on July 3 as part of a nationwide countdown for the birthday, though the event won’t be open to the general public.
As for the Swift-Kelce nuptials, one other detail emerged from the Times story. A permit requested that a tent/canopy be placed outside Madison Square Garden for the event, which would “include 500 to 999 attendees. It also said that trucks would need space to load and unload materials at the arena.”
A florist predicted earlier this year that the wedding could have up to 1 million flowers, and that seems plausible given the location of the ceremony.
Swift herself dropped a few hints about the big day when she appeared on the popular British talk show, “The Graham Norton Show,” on Oct. 3, the same day “The Life of a Showgirl” album debuted last year.
An audience member posted on TikTok that Swift said “no under-18s are coming, just adults.”
Swift also hinted at a mega-event, saying no one was on “the bubble” as far as the invitation list went, suggesting she just might invite everyone she’s ever met.
And apparently there is no wedding registry, either. In fact, the happy couple only requests the presence of their guests.
At this week’s Tight End University in Nashville, San Francisco 49ers star George Kittle told ExtraTV that Swift and Kelce “said absolutely no gifts.”
