For Pete's Sake

Argentina’s post about first World Cup game in KC ignited the state-line debate

Argentina’s social-media team made two big mistakes.
Argentina’s social-media team made two big mistakes.

These World Cup teams that will play or train in Kansas City might need to brush up on their area geography.

You may recall how actor Jason Bateman was baffled to learn that Arrowhead Stadium is located in Kansas City, Missouri, but there also is a Kansas City, Kansas.

For someone who doesn’t live in the area (or some actors), it can be tough to learn that the Kansas City Chiefs and Kansas City Royals play in Missouri. Well, for now.

Some teams will be spending time in both states.

England will train in Missouri, then cross the state line and stay in Kansas. Argentina will stay in Missouri, train in Kansas and play its first World Cup match in Missouri.

There apparently was some confusion with the English language X account of Argentina’s men’s national soccer team.

They shared a poster to preview the team’s first 2026 World Cup match against Algeria (but misspelled their opponent’s name). The image is at Arrowhead Stadium and the words: “Our mission starts here.”

But the videoboard says “Welcome to Kansas.”

Not surprisingly, having Arrowhead Stadium in the wrong state didn’t go unnoticed, and it upset a few folks as the Missouri-Kansas debate continues to rage.
