The New York Giants reportedly tried to trade for a Chiefs defensive player
Chiefs general manager Brett Veach made one big trade earlier this year when he dealt cornerback Trent McDuffie to the Rams for a bunch of draft picks.
We learned Wednesday that Veach had the opportunity to swing another deal. This one would have been with the New York Giants, as ESPN’s Jordan Raanan said on the Breaking Big Blue podcast.
“The linebacker that the Giants actually were going to trade for, from the Kansas City Chiefs — it seemed to be before the start of free agency — Drue Tranquill,” Raanan said on the podcast. “He ended up staying in Kansas City, taking a pay cut to stay. Seems to be something he wanted to do. He didn’t want to leave there.”
The NFL Network’s Mike Garofolo reported in March that Tranquill agreed to a restructured final year of his contract. It reduced his base pay from $6 million to $3.5 million, with $3 million guaranteed. That dropped Tranquill’s cap number by $2.5 million.
That apparently was more palatable to Tranquill that moving to New York.
