For Pete's Sake

Travis Kelce and Alex Smith are competing together again (just not in football)

A few years back, former Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith shared a great golf story about Travis Kelce.

It came when Kelce and Smith were playing in the American Century Celebrity Golf Tournament in South Lake Tahoe, Nevada, with Patrick Mahomes.

Smith, who was with the Chiefs from 2013 to 2017, and Mahomes were at the first tee, but Kelce was nowhere in sight.

“We’re hanging out and waiting for Travis to show up and here comes on the loudspeaker: ‘Travis Kelce, can you please report to the first tee!’ So like Pat and I are joking, ‘Typical Trav,’” Smith said on SiriusXM NFL Radio in 2023. “Five, 10 minutes go by and again, another announcement: ‘Travis Kelce, your group is about to tee off!’ I mean, it’s like on the loudspeaker of a grocery store. ‘Can you please get to the first tee!’”

Mahomes knew better than to wait on Kelce.

“So Patrick has to take off to go find him,” Smith said. “And so he goes running off, and he goes into the hospitality tent, where he finds Travis, who is in there partaking in some cereal for breakfast.

“Travis, I don’t think he’s hit a single golf ball. He just kind of got dressed and went and got a little breakfast. ... Travis hasn’t hit a freaking golf ball. He comes out and he’s kind of stretching on the first tee because he hasn’t swung the clubs since the day before, then proceeds to pipe this ball right down the middle. It was unbelievable. Meanwhile, I’d warmed up for like 30 minutes and put it in the bunker.”

Will Kelce keep Smith waiting again? We will find out soon because the former teammates are in the same foursome at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

The event begins Thursday. Kelce’s partner is Keith Mitchell, while Smith will play with Mackenzie Hughes.

Chiefs fans will be hoping Kelce and Smith will spend a little time reminiscing about the good ol’ days, and it will convince Kelce to come back to Kansas City for one more season.

Regardless of whether that happens, it will be fun to see them competing together again even if they won’t be wearing a Chiefs uniform.
