Royals shortstop Bobby Witt Jr.’s love of hockey came from his father.

Bobby Witt Sr., who pitched for 16 seasons in the majors including 11 with the Texas Rangers, grew up in Massachusetts, so hockey was “a little bit in his blood,” his son said last year.

Watching hockey with his dad, Witt became a Dallas Stars fan and then a season-ticket holder. Early in the season, Witt and his wife, Maggie, were mic’d-up for a Stars game.

“This is way better than watching ‘Dancing With The Stars,’” Witt noted sagaciously in a video shared by the league.

“It was awesome being able to do with my wife,” Witt said later in a Zoom call, “because we’re both big Stars fans, and getting to sit on the glass was awesome. So yeah, it was a really, really fun opportunity that the NHL was great to kind of ask. And it was a lot of fun. We enjoyed it a lot.”

The Stars gave Witt another cool experience recently as he got a temp job with the team. He was part of Dallas’ ice crew, tasked with making sure the players didn’t have any issues skating.

His full-time job with the Royals begins again soon, but he seemed to enjoy being put to work by his favorite NHL team.

“My time to shine,” he said at one point.

Nah, that will be at Kauffman Stadium. But it was still fun to see him at his temp job.
