Three NFL teams to interview former Rockhurst star for head-coach opening: Report

As a star quarterback at Rockhurst High School, Nathan Scheelhaase likely cheered for the Chiefs.

But starting next season, he could be the head coach of one of the Chiefs’ biggest rivals.

After a standout career at Rockhurst, Scheelhaase played at Illinois where he set an Illini record for total offense. When his playing days ended, Scheelhaase coached at Illinois before joining Iowa State’s staff.

Scheelhaase spent six seasons working under Matt Campbell, then was hired by Rams coach Sean McVay to be the team’s pass-game coordinator.

The Rams have the top-scoring offense in the NFL and the No. 1 passing offense this season, and other NFL teams have taken note of Scheelhaase’s work.

Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer reported that three AFC teams have contacted the Rams about interviewing Scheelhaase for their head-coaching vacancy. It’s the Browns, Ravens and Raiders.

McVay gushed about Scheelhaase last March.

“The best thing I can say about him, Nate, is there are certain people you’re around, and they come in, and they have a role and a responsibility that’s defined, and they do a great job of that,” McVay said, per Rams Wire. “But the great ones, they redefine what that is because they just do a little bit more, and they’re just a little bit more intrinsically motivated, and they got just a little bit better feel on how you deal with people.

“And I think this guy’s a special coach, and I’m not going to take for granted the time that I do have with him because I thought it was cool that he chose to stay with us with some other opportunities he had. That meant a lot to me, and he is a rising star without a doubt.”
