For Pete's Sake

Chiefs are only the second team in NFL history to have this weird scoring oddity

The Chiefs made NFL history last season by becoming the first back-to-back champion to return to the Super Bowl.

This season, there was more history as the Chiefs tied a rather unusual mark. It’s not a good thing.

The Chiefs have the eighth-best scoring differential in the NFL at plus-63, which seems good on the surface. But as you know, the Chiefs are below .500 at 6-7 and their postseason hopes look dim, especially after the Chargers’ win Monday.

Pro Football Reference shows the Chiefs’ expected win-loss record based on that scoring differential is 8-5. Well, 8.2-4.8 to be precise.

If you think it’s unusual that the Chiefs have a losing record through 13 games despite a point differential that is better than three-fourths of the league, you’re right.

Opta Stats noted the Chiefs are just the second team in the Super Bowl Era to lose at least 7 of their first 13 games despite having a point differential of plus-60 or better. The other was the 2019 Dallas Cowboys, who finished the season with an 8-8 record and missed the playoffs.

According to Stat Muse, just 11 NFL teams have a positive scoring differential this season. Each of the other 10 teams have won at least eight games this season.
