Travis Kelce shares why he believes the Chiefs offense has turned a corner

Fans tuning to the New Heights podcast Wednesday probably were hoping to hear Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce talk about his latest, um, sideline interaction with coach Andy Reid.

Alas, that topic wasn’t covered, but Kelce did talk about the Chiefs’ 22-9 win over the Giants and why he believes Kansas City’s offense has turned a corner.

“I will say, it feels like we’re rolling,” Kelce said. “It feels like we’re starting to get this thing going on offense, our defense is playing stellar, both this game and last absolutely phenomenal performances. And stopping the run is the biggest thing. Our DBs (defensive backs) are playing really good. We had a few turnovers. And when you win the turnover battle, you typically win the game.”

Of the Chiefs’ five first-half drives against the Giants, four ended with field-goal attempts, although the offense didn’t always look in sync. In the second half, the Chiefs had 178 yards of offense on their first three drives. Two ended with touchdowns.

Kelce’s brother/podcast co-host, Jason Kelce, mentioned Marquise “Hollywood” Brown, who had four receptions for 42 yards on Sunday.

“Hollywood has been playing outstanding,” Travis Kelce said. “He’s been that safety net for Pat and I think we’re going to keep getting this thing rolling, man. Hopefully we get Xavier (Worthy) back here soon and got Rashee Rice back in the building. I know we don’t get to see him for another three weeks, but he’ll get his engine rolling in practices and back in the building, get the swagger back of having the whole unit together.

“Even JuJu Smith-Schuster, I can’t say enough about what JuJu is to this team in terms of his energy, his accountability. He’s always in the right spot, always there for Pat, especially in the rollouts, has a good feel for the game and the offense and just feeling out zones and being in the right place at the right time, man. Just always accountable in the run game as well.”

Travis Kelce then reiterated why he believes the offense is getting things figured out.

“So I think we’re starting to catch some momentum as an offense,” he said. “And I think that comes with, like you said, getting Pop (Isiah Pacheco) going, getting Kareem (Hunt) going, and these big guys up front being able to just get off the ball and move guys, and that’ll help out the pass game a lot.”

Praise for Tyquan Thornton

The Kelces also talked about Chiefs receiver Tyquan Thornton, who had team highs in catches (five) and receiving yards (71) on Sunday. Thornton caught a touchdown pass and nearly had a second on an amazing grab that was the biggest play of Sunday’s game.

“He was a steal,” Travis Kelce said. “I don’t know how he got out of New England, man, but we’re appreciative that they let him go. He’s a smart football player, sure hands on top of that, can run with the best of them, a big body, long arms. And he’s a smart football player. Smart football players are going to thrive in this offense, because coach Reid’s going to put you in positions to where you get those one on one matchups, man; if you know how to attack it, good things are going to happen.

“And I think him, Hollywood, JuJu, we’ve been rolling, and we’ve been getting this thing kind of geared in the right direction. And I think Pat’s just going to keep dialing it in as we go, baby.”

We will find out if Kelce is right Sunday when the Chiefs play host to the Baltimore Ravens.
