The cellphone carrier T-Mobile started a contest last year that awarded money to high schools in towns with a population of less than 150,000.

One of the winners of that Friday Night 5G Lights contest was the Crest Ridge School District in Centerview, Missouri, which is about an hour’s drive from Kansas City.

That was exciting enough for the school, but it got even better last month.

T-Mobile in June filmed a commercial at Crest Ridge High School with Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and former Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski. It was released Thursday to announce the return of T-Mobile’s contest for 2025.

“Growing up in a small town in Texas, I know what high school football means to these communities and how much love the players, parents and fans have for the game,” Mahomes said in a news release. “This competition is all about recognizing that heart and giving these communities the kind of support they deserve.”

One fun part of the commercial is Mahomes playing football with the high-school players.

The Crest Ridge School District shared photos from the commercial shoot on its Instagram account last month.

“On behalf of the Crest Ridge School District we would like to thank everyone who made it possible for the T-Mobile commercial shoot to happen last night,” it wrote. “The students and coaches did a great job representing themselves and the school. We couldn’t be more proud of everyone. Thank you to the fans for coming out, staying late and participating to the max. Last but not least thank you to T-Mobile, DJ Legway, Rob Gronkowski, and Patrick Mahomes II for being here. It was an opportunity of a lifetime and we are so thankful for it. Great Job Cougar Nation!”

More information on the T-Mobile contest can be found on the company’s website.
