For Pete's Sake

Padres hitter was literally wowed by this nasty pitch from Royals’ Seth Lugo

Cardinals first baseman Wilson Contreras struck out four times Saturday in St. Louis’ 6-5 win over the Reds and earned a special distinction.

That’s called a Golden Sombrero by some fans, and it’s fairly rare to see ... though perhaps becoming less uncommon. Strikeouts continue to skyrocket in Major League Baseball.

Padres infielder Luis Arráez is an outlier. Entering Sunday’s game against the Royals, Arráez had not fanned since May 25, per MLB writer Francys Romero.

That was a span of more than 100 plate appearances, and Romero noted Arráez is the second player since 2000 with two streaks of 100 or more plate appearances without striking out. The other is Juan Pierre (2001 and 2004).

Arráez, who had a streak of 141 plate appearances without a strikeout last year, saw his current streak snapped Sunday by Royals pitcher Seth Lugo.

Lugo got the strikeout on a pitch so nasty it literally made Arráez say wow. This pitch moved nearly 1 1/2 feet and cameras caught Arráez’s reaction.
