Could the next Miki Sudo be found right here in Kansas City?

Sudo has won the women’s title in Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July hot dog-eating contest in New York City a record 10 times. Joey Chestnut won it 16 times before being banned a year ago, and Patrick Bertoletti won the men’s championship.

A qualifier for this year’s hot dog eating contest will be held next month at Old Shawnee Days. It will take place at 6 p.m. on June 7.

This is from the Major League Eating website: “For 10 intense minutes, competitors will battle to devour as many juicy, mouthwatering Nathan’s Famous hot dogs as possible. Every bite is a step closer to securing a coveted spot at the Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest at Coney Island. 10 Minutes. Unlimited hot dogs. Two tickets to Coney Island on the line. Also, carnival rides! What better way to spend a Saturday night in June?”

Whoever wins in Shawnee will have a chance to become a national champion.

Unfortunately, registration for the qualifier is already closed, but the competition should be open to people who want to watch.

The Old Shawnee Days website says the eating contest will take place on the main stage at Shawnee Town 1929.

There’s also this warning from the Major League Eating website: “All applicants must be 18 years of age or older and fully acknowledge and understand the inherent dangers and risks associated with participating in an eating contest.”
