Jimmy Conrad explains why he’s serious about his interest in being Sporting KC’s manager

Jimmy Conrad was a rock on Sporting Kansas City’s back line during his eight seasons with the team, when it was known as the Wizards.

From 2003 to 2010, Conrad make six All-Star Game appearances, was selected to the MLS Best XI four times and won the 2005 MLS Defender of the Year award.

He also helped the club win the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup in 2004. And the Wizards advanced to MLS Cup final that same season.

Conrad also made a start for the United States in the 2006 World Cup in Germany, and that sterling résumé is why he’s one of the Sporting Legends.

Although he retired after the 2011 season, Conrad is hoping once again to help Sporting Kansas City in the near future. After the club announced Monday that it had parted ways with manager Peter Vermes, Conrad shared a two-word message for Sporting KC.

“Call me,” Conrad wrote on X.

Conrad, now an analyst for CBS Sports Golazo Network, is known to have a wicked sense of humor. But he wasn’t kidding about his interest in replacing Vermes.

Conrad became a fan favorite in KC because of his play on the field and his interactions with fans.

Every few years, Conrad will return to Kansas City for a pickup soccer game with anyone who wants to play, and he loves the city.

“I’m currently enrolled in the UEFA Coaching Course so coaching is definitely something I want to do,” Conrad wrote in a message to The Star. “And when you mix that in with my love for Kansas City, which is where I established so many incredible memories both on- and off-the-field, it would be an honor to be the coach of this club and to build on the great foundation that Peter has put in place, so we’ll see what happens in the future.”
