Sporting KC fans share their thoughts — happy and sad — about Peter Vermes’ departure
Sporting Kansas City fans made their feelings known over the weekend, and the Major League Soccer franchise’s ownership apparently took note.
Manager Peter Vermes and Sporting KC parted ways on Monday morning following the team’s 0-5-1 start to the season. The breakup came hours after the KC Cauldron and South Stands Supporters Club released a statement calling on Vermes to resign.
It’s an end of the era in Kansas City soccer and Major League Soccer.
Sporting KC won the 2013 MLS Cup under Vermes, along with three U.S. Open Cups titles (in 2012, 2015 and 2017). Sporting won 203 matches during Vermes’ 17 years in charge, the third most for a coach in MLS history.
But this season’s dreadful start followed four years of mediocre results, and fans wanted a change.
After Sporting KC announced it had parted ways with Vermes, fans shared their thoughts on social media. Ditto for MLS broadcaster Nate Bukaty, the former Sporting KC announcer.
“I hope, when the dust settles, that Peter’s tenure is rightfully remembered as one that fundamentally changed the landscape of sports in Kansas City,” Butaky wrote on X. “From a place that people once thought was not a viable MLS market, to a city that will be hosting World Cup matches. Helluva run.”
Some fans welcomed the move and others thought it was a mistake. Here is what they shared on X about Vermes.
One wrote: “Fans about to get a rude awakening. One of the best managers in MLS for what he’s done with a small market budget. And I mean ‘don’t give a (care) about this club’ small budget. That guy goes to a team with ambitious ownership he’ll win immediately. They better have a hell of a replacement ready to go. I think it’s more of a Jerry Jones problem though.”
