Big 12 basketball fans who plan to watch the men’s conference tournament on television next week are in for a surprise.

And it won’t be a happy surprise, either, judging by the reaction from fans who have tuned in for the women’s tournament this week in Kansas City.

The Big 12 conference rolled out a new basketball court (dubbed the “XII Court”) at the T-Mobile Center. The main colors are gray, black and white and the court is covered in Roman numerals.

Television viewers got their first look at the court this week, and the reaction was mostly negative, although there was a smattering of positive responses. Fans took to social media to share their thoughts on the court. Here is a bit of what was being said on X and Reddit.

A fan on Reddit wrote: “Absolute eyesore, I absolutely hate the black and white/grey on courts. I’d even prefer an offensive blue or something. But I’ll also say WHY. Feels like it messes with the depth perception on broadcast. The black and light grey specifically don’t reflect light the same way, which means it’s harder to get a mental picture of depth. Anyone else feel this way?”

Another wrote: “This looks like the only court design allowed in the movie Equilibrium, which is set in a sci-fi dystopian society where emotions have been made illegal.”

A Reddit user shared this: “If the XIIs were just inside the 3pt perimeter then I would be ok with it”

Another wrote: “The XII pattern looks fine, it’s just that black/grey is a fairly dull color scheme”
