Five stats that show Chiefs dynasty wasn’t tarnished by Super Bowl LIX loss
Heading into Super Bowl LIX, the Chiefs had a chance to be known as the best dynasty in NFL history.
An ugly 40-22 loss to the Eagles in the Caesars Superdome derailed that talk and a shot at a Super Bowl three-peat, but that doesn’t take away from what the Chiefs have accomplished over the past seven seasons.
They have played in seven AFC Championship Games, made five trips to the Super Bowl and won three Lombardi Trophies.
These five stats show that the Chiefs dynasty wasn’t tarnished by that loss to the Eagles.
1. Playoff win streak
The Super Bowl loss snapped the Chiefs’ nine-game playoff winning streak, the second longest in NFL history. The New England Patriots’ 10-game winning streak (2002 to 2006) is first, followed by the Chiefs and Green Bay Packers’ nine-game streak (1961 to 1968).
The difference is the Chiefs’ nine-game winning streak was stretched over three consecutive seasons. Both the Packers and Patriots streaks include periods when they missed the playoffs.
ESPN’s Jeff Darlington also said the Chiefs’ nine playoff wins in both 2021-23 and 2022-24 are tied with each other for most ever in a three-year span in NFL history.
2. Gimmie Five
The Chiefs made the Super Bowl for the fifth time in six seasons, the first time that has happened since the NFL-AFL merger. The only other team to make five appearances in an NFL championship game over a six-season span was the New York Giants. They did it in 1958-59 and 1961-63.
Two key differences between those teams.
The Giants made a title game simply by winning their division, while the Chiefs had to win at least two playoff games to advance to the Super Bowl. And the Giants went 0-5 in their championship games, while the Chiefs won three Super Bowl titles.
3. Just win, baby
Darlington noted the Chiefs’ 49 victories since the start of the 2022 season are the most in NFL history over a three-season span. That includes playoff games.
NFL writer Scott Kacsmar said the Chiefs’ 17-3 record in a stretch of playoff games during the Patrick Mahomes era is the best in NFL history.
4. A decade of postseason
The Chiefs’ 10 straight seasons of making the playoffs is second-longest in NFL history
The Patriots hold the record with 11 (2009-19), a number the Chiefs could match next season.
5. Playing in the playoffs
Ahead of Super Bowl LIX, Opta Analyst said the Chiefs were about to play their 19th postseason game during a stretch from 2019-2024. That’s the most in NFL history over a six-year span, one more than the 2013-2018 New England Patriots.
